Dill and the First Frost

Dill is a grey gosling, and tonight the air has gone cold enough to freeze. He and his grandmother go round the whole yard in the dark, working out what can stay out in the frost and what has to be carried into the shed. The last thing they find by the fence is a bumblebee too cold to fly.

There was a house, and in front of the house there was a yard. The yard had a gate at one end and a shed at the other. In the yard stood a grey gosling called Dill. Beside him stood his grandmother, an old grey goose. The day was over. The air had gone sharp and cold, colder than it had been all year. Geese do not mind the cold. So the two of them stood out in it.
